sc 110 Big Book Burning Special!

On today’s very special Smellcast:  Toppie discusses the dangerously maniacal, bible-thumping nut-job Terry Jones and his anti-Islam movement that may — or may not — include a ceremony to burn the Koran on September 11th.  Amidst the chaos of today’s scary times, Toppie asks the only sensible question: “What would John-Boy do?” Listen and learn! Learn to listen!

I don’t support book or flag burning, because both are insulting. I think this pastor threatened to burn the Koran in a desperate plea for attention, which he got.

But we are talking about a book. And just like the bible, it was written by a bunch of guys. So it is not holy. As long as people believe that inanimate objects are from God, we’ll have these types of situations where desecration or the threat of it has everyone in an uproar.

The truth is that there are probably thousands of “holy” books in landfills and thousands more have been incinerated, with no hostile intent. If some idiot burns a few, we can always print more.

I have to wonder how strong a religion is if one nutcase can threaten it. All of this hubbub proves once again that all religions are man-made and therefore insecure.

Thanks for your reasoned response Mark. I couldn’t agree more, especially your last two sentences. Fanatical people — be they benevolent or sinister — scare me because of the responses they provoke in other fanatics. Well… maybe “fanatics” is the wrong word to use when discussing the devoutly religious — but honestly, the devoutly religious seem fanatical to me. How else to explain the years and years of religious terrorism in, say, Ireland for example. The opposing forces both saw god as being on their side. *** sigh ***
